[attr="class","hdinfo"]The second born child of absentee parent’s, Iris’s life showed little promise from the very beginning. She had an older brother, who would eventually become the only constant in all of her memories. There were only two years separating them, but as they got older and their family grew, he took on the responsibilities of the household. Four younger siblings would be added to their family before their mother finally split when the youngest was around two years old. By that time, Iris was twelve and more or less self-sufficient. As she and her brother aged, it fell on their shoulders more and more to raise the children that their parents kept popping out. Iris never questioned this, nor did she feel bitter about it. She simply did what she had to do, and tried her best to make things better for her younger siblings than they had been for her. As soon as he could, her brother starting taking odd jobs around town, so Iris did the same. At first, she mostly babysat when she could or cleaned other people’s houses. Eventually, however, she realized that she was doing better at school than most of her classmates. It didn’t take her long after that to come to the conclusion that their parents would pay her to tutor them. She brought in a pretty good amount of money by doing this, and it took less time than babysitting or cleaning houses (both ventures she normally had to take her youngest siblings with her to complete). Though she still did these two things on the side, she found that she could do them less and less as word got around about what a good tutor she was. As she entered high school, and standardized tests such as the SAT were brought up, she decided she would try and take one. She scraped together the money, took it, and made a very high score on it. It only took her a small amount of time to decide that she would make a lot of money if she could take the test for other people rather than just tutor them for it. Through a lot of deception and fake IDs, Iris started taking the SAT for the older kids in her high school. They paid her large amounts of money for it, which, in her mind, made the risk more than worth it. However, this only worked out for about a year before she got caught. All of the tests she had taken for everyone were no longer valid, and she was in a huge amount of trouble. Her brother had to drag their father out of the gutter to show up to school to speak for her, not that he really helped in the end. Eventually, it was decided that Iris would be sent to reform school as a punishment (considering she couldn’t pay any fines). Sending her to a different school had the added benefit of protecting her from the students she couldn’t refund, most of whom were out for blood. Iris feels very anxious, having been separated from her family for the first time in her life. It’s the worst punishment she could possibly imagine, and all she wants to do is go home. She doesn’t care that she lives a more comfortable life at Birchwood. It isn’t fair when her siblings are still scraping to get by and no longer have her to help. She sends her paychecks home, but she doesn’t feel like it’s nearly enough. |
