No one really had any questions to ask. Rowan's explanations were always pretty straightforward. She let out a huff of air and puffed her chest forward. There were still five minutes of class left, it meant she could show her class the effects of mixing nitric acid with hydrazine. It was a dangerous combination, but she'd be fine enough to do it without destroying the classroom or anything. Rowan made sure to pull her hair back into a ponytail, grabbed a set of goggles, and placed the nitric acid in a beaker to itself. Both of the chemicals she used were ones she had brought from home. No way that the school would let her keep something as dangerous as those chemicals within a classroom. In truth, it was shocking enough that they could keep sodium and chlorine in the same cabinet. When combined and enough sodium was used, someone could likely destroy an entire wing of the school if they wanted to. She took a Pasteur pipette and carefully squeezed it to suck up some hydrazine.
"Now you really want to be careful when distributing the hydrazine. Don't use too much though. But make sure to keep your eyes on--," her words were cut off by the sound of the door opening and a familiar face joining the class. "Mr. Vierra!"
She couldn't help but look up and offer a pleasant wave, accompanied by a smile. Unfortunately her losing her focus for just that moment caused her to squeeze out all of the hydrazine she had in the dropper. The thing that came next was the liquids reacting to one another and sparking a fire. A look of horror shaped her face as she waved her hand for her students to get out of the classroom. And as if on command, they all began to pile out while she grabbed the special fire extinguisher she kept to put out chemical fires. As soon as she was able to put it out though, the dismissal bell had rang. She placed the fire extinguisher down on the table and let out a relieved sigh. Normally that didn't happen, but unfortunately she couldn't stop her excitement when she saw a familiar face. Rowan shrugged off the lab coat and looked at the chemistry teacher.
"Well that was really embarrassing, but I hope it taught them something," she tacked on in a manner of joking. "But did you need anything, Jordan?"
No doubt he did, given his impromptu entrance. After the lab coat was hung over her chair, she reached up and took off her goggles. Fortunately that was the last class of the day in her schedule. In truth, she'd probably go grab something from the cafeteria and wait until the school day concluded to go home. Normally she had a habit of forgetting about lunch until later in the afternoon. She couldn't help it, she was often pretty busy making sure her papers were graded and filed. Rowan flashed her fellow flaxen haired teacher a warm smile. Knowing him, he probably wanted to check to make sure her class was fine, given this was her first year soloing as a teacher. She'd worked with him last year, and it had proven to be quite amusing. |

Oh God, this was bad! His heart dropped down into his stomach the moment fire shot out of the beaker. Had he known she was mixing two reactive chemicals together, he wouldn't have called out her name in the first place! And yet while he wanted nothing more than to run to Rowan to check if she was okay, the students mattered the most. His heart thudded in his chest as he called for all of the students to follow him down into the hallway a safe distance from the room. It rather irritated him that most grabbed their bags before evacuating, but he was too panicked to care. To calm his heart slightly, at least his last glimpse was of her taking the fire extinguisher used specifically for chemical fires. But if she caught on fire or got hurt... it would be all his fault! He could never forgive himself for that. She wasn't his student teacher anymore, but he still felt a measure of protectiveness over her. And thus when the bell rang, he excused the students and rushed back to the room. Though she seemed fine and greeted him with a smile, he couldn't help but walk close to take her face.
"Rorie, are you okay? I didn't know you were mixing together something dangerous, I'm sorry for distracting you," Jordan mumbled as worry clouded over his usually cheerful expression.
As he spoke, he tilted her head to the left and right. She didn't seem to have been hurt. Rather, her skin was immaculate without a trace of blemish. And he couldn't help but feel it was a good thing she was wearing goggles too. The first time he had a reaction catch fire, it ended with his eyebrows fully singed off. People teased him for weeks after calling him the no-brow wonder. When he was satisfied with checking Rowan over, he couldn't help but smile and let out a sigh of relief. Really, Jordan wouldn't have minded if it was himself that got hurt, but somehow the thought of Rowan getting hurt made him feel panicked inside. However after realizing it probably would be best if he stopped touching her face so intimately like that, he quickly withdrew his hands and placed them upon his hips. He frowned as he tried his best to look disapprovingly down at his ex-student teacher.
"Rowan Zales, I am disappointed in you," he began sternly. "You of all people should know taking your eyes off of the beaker when conducting flammable experiences is bad, especially when I did the exact same thing last year... twice! You should be glad you still have your eyebrows!"
Well if he had to be honest, he had the habit of making that mistake a few times every year since the time he began teaching. But he continuously did it because he was stupid! Rowan was not. She was amazingly bright and had potential for much more. Jordan was positive of that! But she spent a whole year working as his student teacher the year before, so he assumed she would have learned from his mistakes. Apparently not. Of course, he couldn't deny the fact his heart skipped a beat when she turned her attention away from her class to wave hello, but her safety mattered the most! He would make sure she learned a lesson from this!

[googlefont=Rubik] | [attr="class","control3"] [attr="class","controlscript"]A humored smile took its place on her features as her fellow science teacher let go of her face and began to explain the accidents with fire he dealt with the previous year. Of course she remembered them all quite well. How could she not forget the time he singed off his eyebrows? She'd even offered to draw on fake ones for him at one point. However unlike Jordan, she made sure to take safety precautions so she would not suffer the same or a worse fate than he. The only thing that stuck out was the outline of googles that had been pressed against her face. But they'd go away soon enough. However she couldn't help but laugh when she saw students in that state, it reminded her of a raccoon. Once Jordan was done rambling, Rowan couldn't help but stand up on her tip toes to give the flaxen haired chemist a quick kiss on the cheek.
"Don't worry about me so much, you're going to end up with grey hair by the time you're 30. Or worse, wrinkles."
It was sweet that he found himself worried, but there was really no need. She'd used his mistakes to reflect on her own safety. Fortunately for him, when she told the stories, she opted to keep his name out. But once students had him in class, they'd realize exactly who she was talking about. She stepped away from the other and proceeded to tidy up her room, or rather just push in all the chairs they'd left sit out in the panic of rushing out of the room. Rowan couldn't blame them though. In truth, she was used to fires of all sorts. Chemicals had a dangerous way of interacting half the time. And most of them were already flammable. The worst reactions were the ones that caused beakers or test tubes to explode. That had already happened in a few of the student labs she'd supervised. Fortunately no one got hurt. Once she finished her walk around the class, the teacher fell to a stop in her stride.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to clean up the foam that came with the fire hydrant. Grabbing the roll of paper towels she kept by the sink, Rowan got to work at wiping down the table she used. It didn't take long, but she didn't want to make it an inconvenience for the janitorial staff. She liked being on good terms with them. She rolled the used paper towel up into a ball and threw an overhand shot at the garbage can, which managed to land in. She couldn't help but clench her fist in pride. But now that the cleaning up was done, Rowan glanced back at Jordan and tilted her head ever so slightly to the side.
"Are you free for the rest of the day? I haven't gotten a chance to eat lunch yet, so I figured I could get something and we could talk."
The nonchalant way she spoke hinted that the talk was nothing serious. More or less, she wanted to inquire about his day and the like. Simple talk, really. After the surprise that came from chemicals spontaneously combusting, she needed to take a break. Her nerves were a little shot after that excitement. |
