The girl’s heart seemed to be in her throat as she stepped gingerly from her dorm. The sun was slipping low in the sky, but the agreed upon meeting time had been 7PM, so she knew that she wasn’t running late. Perhaps the other girl simply had a lot to do? Or preferred late meetings? Either way, it had given Scarlet an opportunity to finish up her assignment for her art class, so she wasn’t complaining too much. Pale arms were snaked tightly around her math book as she walked quickly through the halls. Her hair brushed at her back gently, swaying side to side with each of her steps. Though Scarlet was still vastly uncomfortable in her new school, she was getting there. At the very least, she didn’t feel like she was going to have a heart attack every time she stepped out of her dorm. Not normally, anyway. Tonight she felt somewhat panicky, but that was simply because she was going to be meeting one-on-one with somewhat of a stranger. Though she knew the girl as ‘Alexia’, she didn’t know much else about her. Alexia was older than she was, and apparently much better at math than her. Scarlet sighed at the thought. Math was just… so hard. Her feet beat a well-worn path toward the library. Though Scarlet hadn’t been in the school for long, the library had become one of her only haunts. It was quiet and peaceful there, not to mention that the white-haired girl simply loved to read anyway. As she arrived at the library, she fished her phone from her pocket and lit the screen up. It read 6:52PM, but as her blue gaze traveled nervously across the room in front of her, it landed on the girl who had to be her tutor… considering she had the same math book as herself lying out on the table. Scarlet did her best to swallow her nerves as she approached the table. “H-Hey.” She whispered softly, easing herself into one of the seats. “I’m Scarlet.” She went on, clearing her throat a bit. ▲

| ITs not my fault she sucks at math
Why do I need to tutor
Alexia sighed for what could only be the hundreth time in the pas ten minutes. She didn't care about any of this stupid stuff, math was easy why the heck did she have to tutor anyone- why did anyone need tutoring. Yet even though she told herself that she didn't care in the least, the girl had shown up a full forty five minutes early to be there and be ready. So on the front of not caring totally, might be at least somewhat of a lie, Alexia was feeling a tightness in her chest at the nervous anticipation that came with meeting a new person.
She really didn't know much about whomever it was she was supposed to be helping. Scarlet was the name, that was about the extent of Alexia's information, and that was worrisome. Perhaps it would have been better to hack the girls computer and or phone to learn more about her, that would have been smart. However she'd been distracted by this stupid art project, it was nauseating the teachers restrictions on the project. It couldn't be a piece of software, and no it couldn't be a computer image, or else like her old school she'd have just taken a picture with her phone and run it through some filters. Ugh what a bitch of a teacher, code was art, it was a far better art than dabbing globs of colorful goo on a big white sheet and calling it 'deep' what a pain.
She'd spent the first 20 minutes trying to do something with a blank canvas the teacher had given her, but that went no where so Alexia had, in frustration stuffed the canvas back in her pack and pulled out her imported pocky cinnamon sticks and started to munch on the long shafts of cinamony goodness. While quickly scribbling out her math homework, scarcely putting in any effort, she'd get like 90% without double checking anything and mostly that would be because her writing was so half ass-ed poor that the teachers liked to dock marks for that. Her math was flawless, this level of highschool math was a joke made to challenge those whom were inept at the subject, so at minimal effort it was easy to skate by, unlike stupid art.
A sound of someone approaching snapped Alexia out of her thoughts as she looked upwards at the newcomer, stick between her teeth jutting outwards she spoke with teeth closed to hold onto her treat but using her lips still. "Oh...hey, I'm Alexia" She sounded calm, but there was a tremble in her cinnamon stick that spoke volumes. She was really nervous, people always made her nervous and her heart was beating more than a few ticks faster. An awkward pause between the two that lasted far too long before she spoke again. "I-i.... I guess you need help with math?...what uh do you uh need help with..exactly?

Big blue eyes watched the girl in front of her as Scarlet took a seat. Her anxiety had her on edge, and sharpened her senses to an almost unbearable point. Everything that Alexia did was picked up on. The shaking of the weird thing in her hand in contrast to the cool, calmness of her voice. Scarlet’s lips parted as she attempted to regulate her breathing. Alexia wasn’t going to hurt her, that much was obvious. Scarlet was pretty sure that the other girl was a little nervous too. Well, who wouldn’t be? Meeting new people was scary! Mostly it was the unknown factor, right? Learning to deal with another person. What could be said, what couldn’t. Some found it exciting, but Scarlet found it overwhelming. The next question to roll of the raven’s lips should have been one that Scarlet was expecting. It should have been one that she had prepared for. However, the large doe eyes that regarded the other girl in shocked silence seemed to be all the answer that anyone needed. Scarlet didn’t know what she needed help on, exactly. Everything? Mostly. But that was embarrassing. She chewed her lip, willing herself to speak, but her brain felt frozen. She gripped her fingers into the fabric of her shirt before she ducked and started to dig her math book and some pencils out of her backpack. This simple action seemed to take forever to her, but in reality it was only a few seconds. She placed the book on the table between them and opened it to the chapter the class was currently on. It was a geometry book, and it fell on the chapter about complimentary and supplementary angles. She pointed to it, and then looked up at Alexia. “I don’t get it.” She whispered. Her teacher had explained it in class, and she had listened… but it just wouldn’t sink in. ▲

Alexia squinted at the other girl, for a long moment as she expressed her inability to grasp a simple geometrical equation, and calling it an equation was a stretch. Was she getting rick rolled, how on earth anyone could not grasp this concept. She could see the number, like almost nearly literally just look down and not even do the math in her head the answer was just so obvious. This girl was not serious, she couldn’t be, it was impossible, although she had an expression comparable to a deer caught in the headlights after smoking a bag of weed and being up for 24 hours straight. ”It’s…. 33” She said simply as they looked at each other, she could tell the information wasn’t registering with the other girl. How could it not though, she didn’t understand how that wouldn’t just click on a light inside of this other girls head. There were only three numbers in this whole thing, the angle total, the one given to her and the variable which was so blatantly obvious that she’d have called this 2nd grade math, not high school stuff. Scarlet’s inability to do this was so just baffling to the young woman who seemed like she had no ability to empathize with the other girl. Perhaps this was the reason the teacher had strong armed her into tutoring because this girl was clearly lacking in brain power. ”Okay, it’s easy you just need to find the x, if x is this one, then you add these two numbers to get it, if its this one or that one you just subtract these two to get the angle, easy, see, no problem” It was super simple, how could this girl not get. These sort of things weren’t subjective or open to interpretation they were exact, so to Alexia whose brows were crinkled slightly she tried to think of another way to explain it but it was just that simple. Math was easy to understand because it was always the same, you could do this same question a thousand times and get the same answer each time, the right answer. This wasn’t like English where you had all these opinions, supposedly ‘deeper’ meanings or any of that crap that changed from person to person which was so nauseating. Math was straight forward and clear cut which was why she liked it. Scarlet Cross

Scarlet, thankfully, wasn’t aware of how harshly the other girl was judging her. She was more or less focusing on just not fainting. The whole situation was too much for her. She had begged to not have to go, but in the end, she was sent. And she would continue to be sent until her grades improved. She honestly hated that she couldn’t quite wrap her head around most math. She understood that a lot of it was simple. It even seemed simple when the teacher explained it in class. But when she sat down to do her homework, she lost it all. Scarlet’s real problem was that she didn’t take the right kind of notes in her math classes, and then she was simply unable to teach the math to herself later on. But she had no idea that her math notes sucked, and even if she had known, she wouldn’t have been quite sure how to articulate that. As her tutor simply gave her the answer, Scarlet frowned softly. She didn’t want the answers. She wanted to learn. Either way, when she opened her mouth to say that, she felt herself get somewhat light-headed at the thought, so she closed her mouth instantly. “Oh.” She whispered, lifting a pencil to scratch down the answer. As Alexia went on to explain how she had gotten the answer, Scarlet focused intensely on her. However, the words seemed to simply float right over her head. She swallowed nervously. Her heart was pounding. She was too afraid to say that she had no idea what Alexia had just said. “Oh….” She whispered again, looking from the brunette to her book helplessly. ▲

Alexia could tell that this other girl had no idea what the hell she was talking about. The blank look made her wonder if there was anything inside of this girls head, surely someone would have told her if the person she was supposed to ‘help’ was of the special needs kind. This was so simple, how did you make something that simple even more basic, Alexia had to resist the urge to make all sorts of frustrated gestures and sounds. Clearly this would be a trying task, even her brilliant mind would struggle to impart its infinite knowledge onto this…girl. ”O…….kay” She breathed out a long sigh leaning back to rub her temples with two fingers. “Lets see uhm…. So…… you need to find the….value that is … x She was speaking slowly, not trying to be insulting, in fact she was struggling herself to explain the answer. Depending on where the x is…. That uhm changes the way we need to do things…. Her brain hadn’t worked this hard since she had attempted and failed astro physics math. “It’s kind of easy once you know ..how” mentally having to chant, don’t call her an idiot over and over inside of her mind. “See… the thing is… that obviously when the line stands straight up… it’s 90 degree’s and when its just a flat line that’s 180….that’s why its super easy to figure out. Anything between… because it always has to add up to either 90 or 180… it’s really just addition or subtraction so its super duper ultra simple …give it a try! Oh please please pleas pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee let her understand that. At least she was less nervous, talking about math- even super ultra simple math was comforting and it helped relax her. Although telling scarlet how simple something was when she didn’t appear to understand it might not have been the best of moves. It really was that simple though, at least to Alexia. Scarlet Cross

Alexia seemed to, at least, pick up on the fact that Scarlet was confused. However, as she went on to explain a second time, Scarlet felt her stomach drop. The girl didn’t really… like the brunette’s tone. Though she slowed down significantly… something just… gave her the feeling that she was being judged. She frowned a bit, forcing the thoughts out of her mind to listen to what Alexia was saying. Her eyes looked down at the problems, locating what the brunette was talking about as she spoke. She squinted. And then, suddenly, it seemed to click. “Oh.” She didn’t necessarily sound any more confident than she had the first two times she’d uttered the word, but she at least understood the concept. She looked down at her book, scribbling down the next problem. She worked through it, more slowly than Alexia had the first one, but not agonizingly slowly either. Once she had finished, she sat back and pushed the notebook toward her tutor. What the brunette would find there would be, in fact, the correct answer. The whitette pulled at the ends of her hair nervously. “Sorry.” She whispered again. Though she’d gotten the answer right, and she was relatively certain of that fact, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was bothering Alexia. She said back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest, her body language betraying every bit of the discomfort she felt. ▲

Alexia watched as the girl seemed to get it, and held her breath as the obliviously unconfident space taker upper worked out the problem slowly. She took slow short breathes waiting like this were the climax of some powerful action movie or a steamy movie scene. Taking the note book Alexia scanned over the problem and the working out she did, and although there were faster more direct ways to get the answer, it was indeed correct and so she clapped her hands together with a grin. It was almost a eureka moment, she had taught this person math, if she could do that maybe she could be like a teacher, oh wait teachers dealt with people, eff that. ”Great!” Exclaiming with some genuine enthusiasm. ”See, it’s easy as long as you remember that the L shaped angles are 90’s and the line is 180, and if you invert the L it’s 270 and a full circle is 360, like this….” She quickly drew out a circle and the four angles as a reference point. ”if you can remember that you’ll always be able to figure this stuff out” Speaking more words to this girl than she spoke even at her own trial. In her eager excitement that she had forced information into this girls iron clad skull, she had knocked over her backpack unknowingly and spilled out the canvas as well as an opened pack of crappy very cheap wal-mart Crayola coloring pencils. They spilled out onto the floor but Alexia didn’t notice. She also didn’t know that those sort of leads didn’t work on canvas but to her, every coloring pencil was the same as every other coloring pencil. Art was just a joke anyway right? Scarlet Cross
