[attr="class","colelyrics"]Cause I've done some things that I can't speak And I've tried to wash you away but you just won't leave So won't you take a breath and dive in deep 'Cause I came here so you'd come for me We walk as tall as the skyline | [attr="class,"colewords"]Cole…
Didn’t understand French.
Other students in the class seemed to grip the language easily enough, but Cole found himself struggling. Verbs? Adjectives? They all sounded the same. Simple sentences just weren’t coming to him, and maybe it was because he wasn’t attentive enough but he really did give it the good old college try. He slaved for hours over several late homework assignments, trying fervently to figure out what the hell he was supposed to be doing.
Except he just didn’t get it.
French wasn’t the only class he was struggling with. In most of his other classes he was just barely keeping his head above water. It wasn’t that he didn’t apply himself! He just… apparently wasn’t very smart? Maybe it was stress. Truthfully he didn’t really know, but his most pressing matter was to sort out his French class.
It was a rather gloomy looking Saturday afternoon when Cole finally had enough struggling with the French homework he’d been given. Truthfully he wasn’t even sure if his teacher would be in, after all it was Saturday, but he figured it was worth a shot rather than waiting until the work was late. So, the teen shuffled out of his dorm and made his way to the education building. Even as he walked he tried to skim over the work, but it still made no sense. Part of the assignment was vocab, and while he could probably use google translate he was sure his teacher would have figured it out. Besides, he wanted to actually do well on upcoming tests.
Cole froze for a few moments outside of the classroom, gnawing on his bottom lip anxiously. He didn’t want to bother anyone. Maybe he should just turn around and go back to his dorm? He shook his head, and with a brief burst of condifence he pushed the door to the French room open. Surprisingly, Mr.Lavon was actually in the classroom. Cole wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing, but he looked busy and like he didn’t really want to be here. Not that Cole blamed him. It was his weekend too right?
There was another few moments of awkward silence and a silent pause, before Cole shuffled awkwardly over to the teacher’s desk.
”I don’t understand any of this.” He gave the assignments in his hand a tiny wave, so the older man knew what he was talking about. ”I know you’re probably busy with something but please help me.” He was half-pleading, single eye boring into the teacher.

[attr="class","eklyrics"]I'll chew you up and I'll spit you out [attr="class,"eklyrics"]Cause that's what young love is all about | [attr="class","ekwords"] a quiet hum left his pursed lips. eyes taking in the papers lying messily on his desk. ekvir's lips were always in that same muted frown, eyes sunken in, and headache blazing wildly in his head. a good friend of his dragged him out for a day out and somehow, the wind dragged them to the bar and a heavy drink after another, they somehow ended up tangled in the same sheets and surely, with the next day being a day off, he knew he'll be able to get a much-needed rest from the upcoming hangover. but the following day proved to be hectic when he was called in. leaving behind a 'sorry' notice to the sleeping person who ekvir must've forgotten his name or simply too deep into his hangover to focus on such an information.
needless to say, working while a headache pounded behind his eyes was not fun. usually, ekvir would be eager to go to work. hell, this place was his only escape. convincing his siblings endlessly that he had no free time to visit and taking care of brats was his only job, they were convinced after a few times and miraculously stopped pressuring ekvir to visit.
"fucking hell," he rubbed his brows furiously. the papers seemed to be going on forever. the constant tapping of his pen against the wooden desk, his bouncing leg in utter frustration and the stuck frown on his forehead seemed to make him focus solely on the pounding headache. ekvir was a weak person - no matter how hard he'd try to convince others that he was anything but that. when it came to alcohol, his only escape, he was weak and the drinks helped him forget and so he said 'screw consequences' and apparently, he was screwed over by his actions when he was drunk many times but gladly, none of them had any bad outcome.
just a few more hours. he thought to himself, bending his back forward to rest his elbows on the desk and lean closer to the papers so he could read it more clearly. most of the kids in his class didn't know shit about the language and that was alright, somehow. they were outcasts or whatever, they didn't start caring about school up until now, so making them smart again would surely take time. no outstanding individual arose from all of that, sadly; but he was determined to make one out of them.
he had been too worked up with all the papers and thoughts that he never noticed the approaching footsteps. upon hearing the boy's voice, ekvir almost jumped up violently, but instead he just moved his hand and unfortunately knocked down the glass of water, causing it to spill out the water and his papers were long saved by his lithe hands. "jesus! wear a fucking bell or something," he grimaced at the mess he created.
his attention was caught again by the student who waved his assignments. narrowing his eyes at the boy who gave away that he understood nothing and pleaded for his professor's help. ah great. jesus christ. pinching the bridge of his nose, ekvir motioned for him to bring forth a chair and have a seat. "you want my help, you'll have it. I signed for this," he clarified, moving to his back to grab out a few tissues before going back to clean the desk, wiping away any traces of water, but made sure not to put down the papers for a while until its completely dry. no way in hell was he going to repeat any of his written shit. "okay, kid. listen, either you didn't give a shit through any of my classes or easily forget things, which is normal, i guess." sitting back down, ekvir ran a hand through his strands and stared at the boy. "let's start off simple, then. stop me if you get stuck and if you get dreamy, you better hope i don't see you," ekvir said in a (sweet) tone before taking the papers from the younger and starting off on the first paper. |

I didn’t mean to scare you!” He hadn’t even felt like he’d been walking all that quietly, but if someone was really focusing on something he supposed it made sense that he’d be able to creep up them. Albeit accidentally.
Luckily, Mr.Lavon didn’t seem too upset with him. Frankly he seemed more upset with himself for creating a mess. Everything about the teacher screamed ‘stressed’ a the moment, and Cole was half tempted to just scurry away. It was Saturday after all and the dark haired man probably didn’t want to be here at all.
Before he could chicken out of the help he so desperately needed, Mr.Lavon was motioning for him to grab a chair, and he obeyed. He grabbed the nearest desk chair, sitting it down quietly on the side ofthe desk opposite of the teacher before plopping himself down. A tiny laugh escaped him at the rather blunt statement, he supposed to some extent the teacher had signed up for these sort of encounters. ”That’s one way to think of it,” he said meekly.
”Okay kid, listen…”
Cole’s face flushed at the implication of just slacking off and he shook his head hurriedly. ”No it’s not that I don’t listen!” The words came out in a gush of stammered noises, ”I’m just not… super great at school. I’ve been trying I just… French is hard?” Which wasn’t really true, in class he could sort of grasp it but when he was in his dorm working on assignments… his brain just shut down.
The burn on his face only increased at the teacher’s brass statement, but he forced out a tiny chuckle.
Mr.Lavon was barely through the first couple of words on the page before Cole spoke again, ”I don’t understand how I’m supposed to know if a word is a boy or a girl. Or… no that’s not right. Like… we just call a lamp a lamp. In French it’s… not that there’s boy words and girl words? I don’t get it?”

[attr="class","eklyrics"]I'll chew you up and I'll spit you out [attr="class,"eklyrics"]Cause that's what young love is all about | [attr="class","ekwords"] apology dismissed by a flick of his wrist and a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders, assuring the other boy that he was alright; he was just terribly jumpy sometimes and some people had to pay for that side of him, either by walking out with a bloody nose or a wet shirt or pants. this time, his only casualty was his wooden desk; one that could not protest or hit him for that matter. the boy looked truly sorry, his face giving away his emotions very easily. one could've thought that with a single eye, not many emotions could seep through and reach to the person they were facing; but that was an utter dog breakfast. ekvir offered a stressed smile to put any last pieces of concern in a trash and get this awkward situation over with. he hoped to god that this kid won't go around saying that he scared the hell out of their brooding French teacher who cared only about drinking and sometimes French fries, it was almost too easy for students to bribe him with a few packets of french fries, hot and salty.
the quick defending mechanism of that kid certainly sparked some interest in the man and he snorted at his words. "sure, whatever you say," he dragged the words out in a tired tone before rubbing his temples, sighing for a brief moment before pursing his lips together. "of course it's hard, it's french," for a teacher to say that would mean two things; they don't know jack shit about the language or wanted to scare the other away and make 'em hate the language, but that wasn't his intention nor was the first one. he was having a moment of speaking the truth, really. he was good at french, but at first, it was hell and quite frankly, the raven-haired teacher loved spitting foreign words at someone who doesn't understand what he's going on about. "it's fine, nobody likes school. It's school." he drawled out, eyes half-lidded and chin propped on the palm of his hand.
too soon after he started, the young boy stopped him and ekvir took the moment to reach into his bag, taking out his glasses. "hmm? they're called feminine and masculine adjectives. you differ them by inspecting what the word ends with. for an example; grand: which means, big" he said the word and also wrote it down before going down a few lines. "and then, there's grande." he instructed, writing the word down. "you might say, what the hell, they're the same thing, screw french. but no. you differ between them with the presence of an 'e', if it has that letter, then it is, very much, feminine. if it lacks the word, then it's masculine adjectives. then again, French isn't that easy. there are a few challenges and a few more different ways. such as, if the several short adjectives ended in vowel and consonant." he noted, adding a few more words before dragging his pen over them as he pronounced them. "there is bon: which means, good and obviously, it's masculine. but, this time, we won't simply add an 'e' and magically turn this big fart into a feminine," he told him, inspecting the boy before writing down something else. "we add an 'n' and 'e' which turns it to: bonne." he said, nodding a few times. "There are many more things and I think that you need to rewrite them at least a couple of times and repeat them every single day so that your mind wouldn't forget them," ekvir told the younger and gave him an assuring tight-lipped smile. "people don't learn French in a day, we didn't build the world in a day, kid. you need time, if not years if you want to excel in French unless you just wanna get by this godforsaken year and forget it." he told him before running a hand through his hair again, picking on his old habit once more. "so, by the end, I'll write the adjectives and I need you to know them very well because I will make you stand up in the middle of the class to tell me a few, shall we proceed?" oh he'll definitely do that. ekvir doesn't joke around and he doesn't take it easy on the students because if he does that, they'll slip and wither away and like hell he'd let them slip that easily without passing this year with a good grade. |

Cole dug his teeth into his bottom lip to keep himself quiet, fidgeting about for a moment. It was obvious his teacher didn’t care much for his excuses.
”Of course it’s hard, it’s French.
Ekvir wasn’t pulling any punches, and Cole laughed nervously at the statement. Knowing this class was only going to get harder didn’t really bode well with him. He remained silent though, lifting a hand to absentmindedly gnaw on his fingers.
”I like school,” Cole said slowly, thoughtfully. ”I like to learn even if I’m not good at it.” It probably didn’t help that his knowledge really wasn’t up to that of a senior. Most of his school time had been spent unable to actually attend classes, and then teachers would just pity-pass him. A nice deed, but something that had obviously screwed him over in the end.
Cole inched closer to the teacher’s desk, listening intently to what he was saying as he explained how masculine and feminine adjectives worked. Honestly, it made his head feel like it was going to explode, but he was determined to take something away from this lesson. French would probably never make a lot of sense to him but he could pretend he understood.
A tiny nod escaped him as Ekvir explained that he would need to write the words down each day, and repeat them out loud. That made sense, and it was a good idea. It was something he had sort of already been doing, but they still hadn’t really stuck with him. The “promise” of asking him to stand up in class and repeat the words made Cole’s stomach drop. The discomfort he felt at the suggestion was clear on his face, but he didn’t respond directly, and instead only continued to gnaw on the fleshy bits of his fingers.
Cole was quiet for a short while as he followed Ekvir’s words, watching as he continued to write down words and explain what they meant or how to know if they were feminine or masculine. His silence could have been mistaken for having zoned out, but he was focusing extremely hard.
”Why did you wanna teach French? It’s so hard” He broke his self imposed silence with a loud groan, single eye closing in frustration. ”My brain feels like it’s dying.”
